A game where the player must carefully drop rabbits onto landing pads, avoiding moving objects and trying to hit the higher scored pads.

Every level adds a new layer of frustration in Droplets, the newest from Nitrome. Despite the title, there's no water falling from the sky — only little bunny-like creatures. From the top of the gameplay area, drop the pixelated long-eared "droplets" in the right place and the right pixel, at the right time and the right angle, to collect carrots and enough points to advance to the next level.

Frustration may cause you to throw your mouse pad across the room, but with Droplets, there's something addictive about the challenge. It's similar to both Nitrome's own Small Fry and Plinko, the classic game from The Price is Right, but its obstacles and adorable graphics are enough to set it apart.

My Take: I had 15 minutes of free time yesterday before my day was done, and I just stumbled upon a new game by my newly-discovered indie developer in Nitrome Ltd. As outlined above, the game Droplets seems simple enough to conform to: line up your floppy-eared, pixelated-bunnies at the top of your screen, and just let 'em go. Watch as they gracefully fly through the air, or plummet to the ground screaming, depending on your technique and/or expertise. I found it a great little diversion to the monotony of my day, but it really consumed me whole as I noticed nearly two hours later that I was still trying my hand at completing just one more level. It is a simple game experience that is easy enough to catch your interest, but quite difficult enough in the later levels that you'd consider it an accomplishment that you made the minimum score to advance.

Game Over
created & directed by Adam Pesapane (aka PES)
produced by Sarah Phelps and PES
completed in 2006 ; released in early January of 2007

In "Game Over", (2006)
PES recreated classic arcade death sequences (from the games Centipede, Frogger, Asteroids, Space Invaders, and Pac-Man)
with familiar objects including muffins, toy cars, insects, pizza and fried eggs. The film was inspired by an interview with Toru Iwatani, the creator of Pac-Man,
who said the original source of inspiration for the Pac-Man character was a pizza with a slice missing.

-- Ron Gilbert, creator of Monkey Island, responds to Roger Ebert on video games not being art

article: Roger, Roger, Roger (the source is actually from Gilbert's own weblog)

backstory: Roger Ebert claimed, in his own estimation, that video games can never be art. Even after much debate over his long-standing view on the matter, people were not satsified that he just left as nebulous and without explanation as he done so up 'til now. Up until he decided to participate in a vis-à-vis amongst (against?) one particular spokesperson (whom might as well represent the whole of the video game community, as they are now voicing their opinions, like the following).

condensed response (via the article)
"Here is my challenge to Roger: Why is Monkey Island not art, yet, the Pirates of the Caribbean movie is art?

I will hold the story and characters of Monkey Island up to the Pirates of the Caribbean movie any day. The story in Monkey Island 1 and 2 is as deep and complex and interesting as that of Pirates of the Caribbean. The characters are as living and real and developed as you’ll find in any film, I’d even argue more so since you can have conversations with them and explore the nooks and crannies of their stories in a way a movie or book cannot.

Roger also mentions in his essay “Why are gamers so intensely concerned, anyway, that games be defined as art?” I would ask: why are you so concerned that they are not? You’re the one that keeps bring this up, not us."

This custom action figure was created by eBay seller "fugayze" and is part of a set that includes Mario and Pauline.

http://i44.tinypic.com/f0xl05.jpg

author's comments:
"Donkey Kong is at it again! He infiltrated Mario's pad and nabbed Pauline while she and her plumber where sleeping. Needless to say Mario is pissed, he has had enough of Donkey's monkeying around. Mario grabbed his monkey wrench and is on his way to torque some fuzzy nuts!

This auction consists of Mario, Pauline, Donkey Kong, 4 barrels, and the steel beam platform. Mario stands 6 inches tall and has lots of articulation. Donkey Kong stands around 9 inches tall and also has plenty of articulation so you can pose him to your delight. The platform is 19 inches long and 13 inches high.

Mario and Pauline have had been extensively resculpted and all figures have been painted with multiple layers of the highest quality paints to bring out all the fabulous details. The steel beam base was scratch made from modeling wood, needless to say it took quite a bit of time.

My work has been winner of various on-line customizing awards and has most recently been featured in Nintendo Power Magazine volume 254! This is a one of a kind custom set from my personal collection and will not be remade.

In Honor of Pac-Man's Thirtieth Anniversary, Google Does the Icon Proud

Google sure knows how to throw an anniversary party. In honor of Pac-Man's thirtieth birthday, Google has replaced the front of its search engine with a cool new Google Doodle that turns the logo into a classic Pac-Man maze. It gets better. The Pac-Man maze is playable. All you need to do to play is go to Google's front page and either click on the insert coin button or wait a few seconds. Then, Pac's off and you are in control. In fact, two people can play co-op Pac-Man on the Google Doodle if you tap the insert coin twice.

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5...1095821001.jpg

The Pac-Man Google Doodle is actually more than just a little playable Pac-Man game.
Google went so far as to recreate the personalities of all four ghosts.
The Pac-Man Google Doodle even has the level 256 kill screen.

The Pac-Man Google Doodle will be live for the next two days.
Give it a go. To be perfectly honest, it is so awesome.
And be sure to post your high scores in the comments.
Let us know if you hit the kill screen.

VVVVVV hooked me with was its simple but endlessly flexible gameplay, focused

anti-pac-man: you control the ghosts!

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/4216/antipacman.jpg

Here’s an interesting concept:
what if Pac-Man’s gameplay were the exact opposite of what you’ve come to expect after all these years. That is to say, what if, instead of Pac-Man being chased by ghosts, you controlled the ghosts and Pac-Man came after you. That’s exactly the idea of this new Flash game called “Anti Pac-Man”.

The concept is simple.
Think of it like a squad based version of Pac-Man. Use the keys numbered 1 through 4 to take command of each ghost, then use the arrow keys to guide them away from your yellow dot-gobbling nemesis. As Pac-Man eats up, your score keeps going down, but if you can keep your ghosts alive, you can minimize the damage.

There's also a ton of other stuff going on, like chiptunes parties and game installations.
If you're in or around New York City next month, and want to read more about what's
happening, you can hit up the Game Play festival's official site below.

Tetris Alley - as seen in the streets of Sydney, Australia.

excerpt:
Further exploration revealed that Giant Tetris (aka “One More Go One More Go”)
is actually part of an outdoor art exhibition called Live Lanes – By George!
which runs through January 31, 2009. The larger-than-life installation was put
together by the guys over at Gaffa Gallery, who clearly have fond memories of
the classic brick-stacking puzzler.

CellCraft Is One Intelligently Designed Cellular Biology Game

synopsis:
There's fun to be had and lessons to be learned about cellular biology in CellCraft, as long as you can weather the argument over whether or not it's a creationist take on the subject.

CellCraft is a nifty little free Flash game that takes the complicated process of teaching cellular biology and turns it into a real-time strategy game. You start with a simple cell, moving it about a petri dish to collect the resources it needs to grow more complex structures in order to keep it healthy and defend it against invading viruses.

I had the same dilemma when I played with greedy friends who would just as soon have compatriot die than abandon random pizza.
(same goes with the game Double Dragon, and that Sega game about hammers and/or axes.)

Fanservice! Wednesday feature: Customized Condoms by Ben Marsh

http://i52.tinypic.com/alrom9.jpg

Ben Marsh, 21 is studying for a bachelors in Visual Communication at Loughborough University, UK. He got the very good idea to think about geeks’ sexual life. Hell yeah, guys, I know very well that your favorite websites are not only the ones talking about video games or graphic design… Anyway Ben Marsh created an awesome condom packaging, a tribute to love and Nintendo Game Boy. Let’s hope that the condom industry buys his idea, in order to, one day, ask the pharmacist for a Donkey Kong Extra Large… Or a little Mario, whatever…

It's a real wonder in how I add new posts daily into my queue for this venture, yet I only seem to only find the time to actually post within it a month at a time.

I doubt anyone cares much, as evidenced by the scant 2-3 replies here not attributed to self, but still... I pride myself in getting things done, and continuing such other things that need be done.

Back to the inanity (I guess) that is video-game-centric content.
Enjoy.

Pixels is a amazing. I love that video. I first saw that about 6 months ago.

Jetée 11-09-2010 08:59 PM

I'll add more video-game-centric YT videos accordingly, if that's what will get the traffic (and the replies) ; I know I have a queue-filled with video game posts, and at least 10% have to be animated and playable. Would you like to see more?

at the moment tho, I'm going to back to my theme-within-the-theme:

What to watch for in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 -- News from GamePro

excerpt:
Quote:

The game is due out in summer 2011 for Japan with a Western-territory release to follow at an unnamed date. Beyond that, [Namco developer, Katsuhiro] Harada couldn't reveal much about the game besides the following tidbits obtained during a GamePro interview:
* This game will have the largest roster of any Tekken game yet.
* There will be a significant number of returning characters that didn't make the roster in Tekken 6 or Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion.
* Like Tekken Tag, this game exists as a side-story to the main Tekken plot.
* The developer is making some key tweaks to combat to improve on what Tekken 6 contributed to the fighting game genre. In particular, Harada told us to "watch out for" floating mechanics.
