Post a Webcomic!

This is how this thread is going to work. There have been many webcomic threads on here, but I want this one to work a bit differently than others. Here are the rules. Post a single web comic strip per post. I would like this to work a bit like the "Portraits Thread" or Jetée's The Original Animated Short where it has minimal or no comments. I'd like this thread to be nothing but funny comics from our favorite webcomics.

Try to post from a different webcomic per post, but I don't mind if you come back to a comic after posting different comics. I just don't want to see 50 comics form the same comic on here. Let's keep to this format.

{Comic}
{Bio of comic} If you want too.
{Link to comic} This is required.

Also, alot of drama/"real life" comics have lots of inside jokes or jokes that need to have alot of back story to get. Let's stick to comics that are funny to anyone who hasn't read the entire comic. I'll start.

The plot centers on Marten Reed, an indie rock aficionado; his roommate, Faye Whitaker; and Faye's boss, Dora Bianchi. Supporting characters include employees of the local coffee shop and anthropomorphized personal computers. QC's storytelling style combines romantic melodrama, sitcom, humor about indie rock music, and sexual or scatological humor.

Piled Higher and Deeper (also known as PhD Comics) is a newspaper and web comic strip written and drawn by Jorge Cham that follows the lives of several grad students. First published in the fall of 1997 when Cham was a grad student himself at Stanford University, the strip deals with issues of life in graduate school, including the difficulties of scientific research, the perils of procrastination, the complex student–supervisor relationship and the endless search for free food. Cham continued the strip as an Instructor in mechanical engineering at Caltech, and now draws and gives talks about the strip full time

Ha, way to steal an idea of mine without even knowing it! (Really, good on you, Eden, 'cause this idea popped into my head about a week ago, but then I thought that we might have already had a thread like this, so I began searching the archives, then I forgot about it the next day, remembered again, and started waffling about when I was going to gather up enough initiative and free time to begin the process for this new thread about webcomics, or any comic strip, really, in general.)

So, here's my addition:

Quote:

Wrapped in the shawl of the internet's glorious anonymity, I write to you, oh reader, to ease your sensible--albeit misplaced--skepticism about the nature of this web comic.

Who is the scribe? From what zany world do such perversions of creative thought erupt? Many of you are likely curious about the heritage of the twisted imagination. You may be asking, what ample mind is being pillaged for such golden thought-nuggets? As you surf from comic to comic, narrowly balancing your understanding of the humor with your urge to reach across the internet and punch the cartoonist in the face, you're probably asking yourself why the author is peeing in the mouth of comedy. Who is this jackass cartoonist who so openly coddles puns affectionately and without reservation? If you're anything like the author, you've probably already stopped reading and are thinking about that half-eaten string cheese staring at you from my dinner table and so I got up and ate it and sat back down and am finishing the sentence even though I forgot what I'm talking about. You've come far enough to dig for information about the author of this web comic, and in the spirit of full transparency I will share my story.

Alas, I am, in fact, a dinosaur.

Wait! Stay your premature biases; stay your dino-hate! I am not the cold-blooded killer portrayed in Jurassic Park movies (although I am cold-blooded, which isn't a problem in the 21st century with technological wonders like the Slanket, a backwards robe I wear perpetually for its duel benefit of providing warmth and easy access to the TV clicker). I am not the dinosaur stereotype the media has created--there is no Godzilla-esque thirst for human flesh (I mainly drink Yoohoo!), I do not have a peanut-sized brian. Actually, in fairness, The Land Before Time portrayed everything pretty accurately--especially how they painted Triceratops as dicks (golly, Sarah sucked in those movies, didn't she?).

The logic behind my personal story is epic in its deficiencies: how I survived all these many years, learned the English language, moved to New York City and created a Web Comic to make a living.

But do not judge me for this. Does comedy not transcend the barriers of skin and race? Even those who are different are still prone to experience and share humor. Peel back your layers of prejudice and enjoy this website for what it is--stupid, innocent satire and playful dim wit. Together, let us explore the convolutions of humor, let us push the limits of our perspective, let us use these comics to approach the spirit of jesting from a new and different angle!

With each comic I am metaphorically extending my hand to you--the reader--like a poor adventuresome young man trying to court a woman with diamond-souled shoes in a cheesy romantic comedy. Take my hand, and let us explore my web comic together!

Each comic should be a portal; a backwards-telescope-kaleidoscope-thing that allows you to see reflections of yourself you thought were left behind in grade-school. Laugh out loud. Write (dirty?) comments as reviews. Share comics with your friends. My goal is to help you sweep back the dust from a newly discovered comic, make like a sexy-archeologist-lady and proclaim unequivocally: "I DIG IT!"

Cheers,
Jason "Bones" Boneasaurus

I didn't mention newspaper strips in the beginning because I didn't want a bunch of Garfield strips popping up in here. I would rather it feature "web only" strips, as that will gather more readers for the sites which could lead to more money for these artists. I'm not against newspaper strips, (I like foxtrot) but I'd lick to stick to web comics. If the strip isn't as well known in the newspaper comic world, I might be ok with posting it here.

It’s considered an honorific, and used in the same manner as “Jr.” or “PhD”: there’s a single space before it. The exclamation point is not pronounced — though many have tried, often with hilarious results.

I’m currently the Supreme Commander of Publicity & Promotions for TopatoCo, the world’s most interesting artist-direct merchandise website. In the past, I’ve been a professional movie trailer editor, a volunteer search & rescue pilot, a freelance firearm specialist for film & television, and a picture-framer. Sometimes all at the same time.

In 2009, I began turning down all other work to focus on Wondermark and TopatoCo, and currently I’m one of the small (but growing!) number of individuals supported entirely by the exciting medium of Comics on the Internet™. My income comes mainly from book and apparel sales, as well as (in much smaller measures) private commissions and the sale of advertising on this site.

Wondermark is created from 19th-Century woodcuts and engravings, scanned from my personal collection of old books and also from volumes in the Los Angeles Central Library. Most of the books are bound volumes of general-interest magazines such as Harper’s, Frank Leslie’s and Punch, but my collection also includes special-interest magazines such as Scientific American, Sears-Roebuck catalogs, storybooks, and primers.

Wondermark began in April 2003. It’s been in several papers over the years (most notably in the print edition of The Onion from 2006-2009) but these days is found mostly online or in collections from Dark Horse Books.

In addition to creating comics, I also write on the subject of beards, the comic strip medium, advertising, media literacy and business. I live in Los Angeles with my wife Nikki, and I love kittens.

You can feel free to re-post any comics from this site on your blog, Facebook, LiveJournal, etc. without asking permission, so long as you include a link back to wondermark.com as well!

Ctrl+Alt+Del (CAD) is a gaming-related webcomic and animated series written by Tim Buckley. The name of the comic refers to the Windows command Control-Alt-Delete. It premiered on October 23, 2002, and is currently updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The comic's focus has gradually shifted away from single strip gags towards longer story arcs and greater continuity. Buckley makes a living from Ctrl+Alt+Del, placing him in a small group of web comic artists devoted to their comics full-time.

I'd hate to ruin this nice clean thread with a few sexy loser comics so I'll just comment that there's a great selection starting up in this thread. :)

LordEden 02-11-2010 09:49 AM

Reese: If you hide the images behind a link, it will be ok. Personally I'd rather you post a comic than a comment, but that's just me being anal.

This is his first comic of the series, it's a bit rough artwork wise compared to what he does now, but it's also the first comic I ever read on the net. It does give a good representation of his sense of humor.

Something Positive

Something*Positive is the story of a few friends - namely Davan, Aubrey, PeeJee, and Jason - and their daily lifes, struggles, and the occasional mass catgirl cataclysm. The story began in Boston in 2001. Since then, it's expanded to Texas, California, and a few other nightmares along the way.

These are people you know, although you may not admit it. It's just a comic about trying to live you life and bringing a few friends with you so you don't kill anyone. At least, not anyone you might get in trouble for.

I thought about doing the same thing about two weeks ago, but most of the sexylosers comics are part of a bigger series and history ("kenta and his mom", "the suicide girl", etc.) so it wouldn't be nearly as funny (inside-joke-wise) unless a strip was displayed with links to the next successive comics in that particular universe. Too much work, I thought.

This was the first strip of Girls With Slingshots that I read. Shortly after reading this one, I went to the website and read every single one. It's a "slice of life" comic, with Hazel and Jamie as the main characters, and their friends in supporting roles (this one features Jameson and Maureen.) Oh, and there's also a talking Irish cactus that only talks to Hazel. When she's drunk.

A Softer World is a comic that was created by Emily Horne and Joey Comeau so that people would recognize them as important artistic geniuses. Sometimes the "comic" is sad or harsh. It should be noted that this is in the tradition of George Simenon's 'romans durs' (or 'hard novels') and not in the lesser traditions of comics like Peanuts or anything else not French.

Mainly the multiple strips (panels, "comics", whatever) per post for the same webcomic would be alright, especially for shorter strips (just don't overload it 2-3 would be max). I just like to keep it to one webcomic per post, so that you don't' get confused about the links to each comic. I want this thread to 1) be about posting funny comics and 2) be about linking those those comics so people can read the archives (which brings money to the authors in advertising sales and sometimes mech sales). Like Cinn's post, I sent her the link to that one comic, which as she said she read the whole thing. Now that comic has a new regular fan of the series.

-Nothing, really. Geeking for the sake of geekery. HijiNKS Ensue doesn’t really follow a story. Most of the comics use one geek pop-culture reference to make fun of another geek pop-culture reference. That sounds stupid when you read it out loud but it ends up working in the end. If you are into SciFi, Technology, Comic Books, Cartoons, 80’s TV, Non 80’s TV or geek-life in general you should find something to laugh at here.

When I was a kid, I drew cartoons all the time. I drew cows and alligators and pigs and superheroes. I drew a platypus named Ed. I drew a dead dog named Dead Dog Bob. I drew everything I saw and everything I wanted to see.

Many years passed. By a strange series of coincidences, I found myself working in an office. The more I used a keyboard, the worse my penmanship became. The constant hum of computers made my brain twitch. That’s when I stopped drawing cartoons.

Then the chickens came.

Like some sort of haunting supernatural force, the chickens bubbled up from the ol’ subconscious mind. In a trance-like state, I drew them on office whiteboards. I drew them in notebooks. I drew them on anything that sat still long enough. People started asking, “Who’s drawing those damn chicken cartoons everywhere?”

The chickens were unstoppable. To retain my sanity, all I could do was grab a stack of sticky notes, and release the Savage Chickens.

Well, let’s see. There’s three of us last time we all sat down for a headcount (best 10 minute meeting ever by the way). There’s me Ray, then there’s Will and Raf. Two of us are related, but Will is taller than Raf who spent five dollars more than me on ice-cream. You do the math. If you see us at a party, we’re the three dudes in the back arguing about whether or not a light saber could stop an oncoming Mario fireball (in case you were wondering, oh yeah, it can), or if the lung capacity of a cheetah is greater than that of a house cat (we really have no idea).

Hello. This is Raf. I’d like to be frank for a moment if I may. Okay, I’m done. I’d like to be Raf again. I’ll begin at the beginning. The idea of starting a web comic came to us during dinner. We wanted to venture into something new and exciting, so we deliberated and narrowed it down to two viable options: option A was starting a web-comic; option B was becoming superheros. When it was made clear to us that the ability to consume large quantities of food in a short period of time was NOT a superpower, we went with option A.

Anyway, the comic is simply a commentary on the love life of sandwiches.

YouTube - Axe Cop Episode ONE

Axe Cop: The Comic Written by a 5-Year-Old, Drawn by a 29-Year-Old

Here is the actual strip from which the narrative stems: (note, the strips are very big in filesize)

Axe Cop #1   click to show

and here is the daily (weekly) workshop the family tandem goes through in creating the comic strip:

The writing process is basically just me quizzing Malachai as he develops the saga. I'll just try to pry all the details out of him and write them all down until something like a complete little story has been formed. Everything in AXE COP started in Malachai's head, all I do is sort it out and draw it. Here is a video of the writing process. So enjoy these comics, they are a fun slice of the mind of a 5 year old boy processed through the pen of a 30 year old comic artist.

along with Episode TWO

Axe Cop #2   click to show

Quote:

The AXE COP saga began on a Christmas visit to see my family. My Father, a man with very healthy loins, has managed to produce a variety of children, ranging from me, a 29 year old comic book artist, to my 5 year old brother Malachai, a 5 year old boy genius, with four other siblings in between. During the visit Malchai was running around with his toy fireman axe and he said he was playing "Axe Cop." He asked me to play with him, and I asked what my weapon was... so he brought me a toy flute (actually a recorder). I told him I would rather be Axe Cop then Flute Cop, and he seemed just fine with being Flute Cop. The story that followed became more and more brilliant, until I couldn't contain myself and I had to draw the whole thing into a one page comic. From there the saga continued, and over the course of my week-long visit we cranked out the first four episodes of AXE COP. I posted the comics to my blog and on Facebook and they got great responses. I decided to give AXE COP a home on the internet here and attempt to continue the saga as often as I have time to draw them, and I can get Malachai to write them.

Please send us your comments and questions, but keep in mind a child is present, so watch your frickin' language.

Even though there has been minimal to no conversation of late, I have to say your latest webcomic share, LoganSnake, has been, and probably is, the funniest one I've seen featured on this page. Thanks for posting it. (although I do wonder who the author of it is)

Wilson by Daniel Clowes: May 2010.

Quote:

Meet Wilson, an opinionated middle-aged loner who loves his dog and quite possibly no one else. In an ongoing quest to find human connection, he badgers friend and stranger alike into a series of one-sided conversations, punctuating his own lofty discursions with a brutally honest, self-negating sense of humor. After his father dies, Wilson, now irrevocably alone, sets out to find his ex-wife with the hope of rekindling their long-dead relationship, and discovers he has a teenage daughter, born after the marriage ended and given up for adoption. Wilson eventually forces all three to reconnect as a family - a doomed mission that will surely, inevitably backfire.

Raynato Castro (usually Tuesdays): Ray’s lifelong goal is to some day master the one-inch punch. He can perform the two-inch punch. However, the density of air and the distance of the earth from the sun limits its effectiveness in most practical cases (e.g. demolishing buildings, defeating claw-fisted drug lords, knocking on really big doors, aiding choking babies).

In the meantime, Ray spends his days at the foot of a waterfall, training.

Quote:

Katharine Chandler Tiedrich XIV was born to wealthy Russian aristocrats in 1823, where she was trained in swordsmanship, honor, and how to play the accordion. Not long after, however, her family's prized diamond mine collapsed and plunged into bankruptcy. Stricken by poverty and in fear of being sold to the circus, Katie ran away from home at age nine and joined a ragtag crew of bloodthirsty pirates.

During the next twenty years, Katie circumnavigated the Earth and discovered Atlantis, which she sunk out of contempt. She also discovered Australia, but left almost immediately because the whole continent sucked and boomerangs are no good for plunder. While on her travels, she founded the city of Rome and carved Switzerland out of a meteorite, depositing it between Italy and France, just to keep an eye on them.

This one time, off the coast of Iceland, while fighting a kraken one-on-one with nothing but a steak knife to defend herself, Katie accidentally opened a rift in time and space when casting Firaga. She was flung thousands of years into the future (300,000 A.D., to be exact), when horrible insect mutants ruled the Earth. Calling themselves the Uurek'han, these titans had blocked out the sun with an organic smog, reterraforming the planet to their dank preference. Here Katie started an underground resistance movement, populated by the last remaining humans and a couple of dogs, who could talk by then. They fought in harsh conditions against impossible odds for years, and in one struggle Katie lost her right hand to a giant robotic praying mantis. It was okay though, because she is lefthanded anyway.

Many centuries and brutal clashes later, the small armada finally defeated the Uurek'han, destroying their smog machines and sending them back into the deepest reaches of space from whence they came. Katie lived in the future for a few more months, supervising the reconstruction of society and making sure France was never rebuilt. Her duty completed, Katie returned to the present by punching the ground so hard the shockwaves made the Earth's core spin backwards at over nine thousand RPM.

Reunited with her crew, Katie continued her original quest of piracy. After stealing everything of worth in Europe and western Africa, she hung up her silly pirate hat for a brief hiatus and trained under a waterfall or in a Denny's parking lot (this part is kind of fuzzy), then joined a clan of Arabian stragglers in the harsh deserts of Scotland. Here she slayed countless dragons who happened to be terrorizing the land.

Satisfied with her work, Katie returned to her home in the center of the Earth, where she has lived to this day. She now draws crappy comics by day and fights the Justice League by night.

For the first several years, the comic consisted of four square panels of dialogue in a two-by-two grid, with a punchline (often a non sequitur, pun, or pop culture reference) in the final panel. In 2005 Stevens abandoned this traditional form and began consistently publishing strips with more panels in slightly more varied configurations. Single panels of the strip are occasionally animated. The comic depicts a world where robots exist alongside humans, with human-robot romantic and sexual relationships commonplace.

Things That Can Make You Feel Like an Idiot Almost Instantly

Foreword: There are certain things that can bring even the most confident people to their knees with crushing self-doubt and insecurity. These are some of those things.

Not having pockets to put your hands in while listening to someone else talk
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/6...nfidence12.png

author's comments:
"If you find yourself listening to someone else talk for a long period of time, you are going to need something to do with your hands so that you can maintain the appearance of being attentive yet relaxed. Usually, putting your hands in your pockets works beautifully in this situation. But what happens when you are wearing something that doesn't have pockets?

First, you grope anxiously at your sides where your pockets should be. They aren't there, but you look for them anyway. Once you realize that there are no pockets and there never will be any pockets no matter how much you wish for them, you begin futilely cycling through a series of increasingly awkward hand positions; hands on your hips like a superhero, arms folded lightly over your chest like an insecure preteen, arms folded purposefully over your chest like an angry farmer, hands dangling limply at your sides - they all make you feel insecure and unnatural.

You become so focused on choosing the least awkward position for your hands that you lose track of the conversation entirely. This only adds to the problem because now you also have to worry about whether the stance you choose is appropriate for the conversation. You don't want to be standing there with your hands squarely on your hips like Superman if your friend was just talking about his dead grandmother."

Schrödinger’s Infinitesimal Miscalculation

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/7...germiscalc.jpg
originally posted May 16, 2008

author's comments:
I'm sure that many of you are familiar with Schrödinger’s cat but I still feel compelled to
give a short description here. However, please note that I will only be explaining enough to
make sense of the comic and that many details will be omitted.
The idea of “Schrödinger’s cat (paradox)” was put forth by the Austrian physicist Erwin
Schrödinger in 1935 as a thought experiment to illustrate the absurdity of (what has come
to be known as) the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics when applied to the
“real” world of common sense and macroscopic objects.

Imagine a box that is so perfectly sealed that no physical influence can get in or out.

Now imagine that a cat is inside the box along with a device that can kill the cat when
triggered by some “quantum event”. That is the setting for Schrödinger's cat. In
Schrödinger's original version, the quantum event was the decay of a radioactive atom.
Schrödinger asserted that the Copenhagen interpretation implies that the cat remains in a
"superposition" of states: (both alive and dead) until the box is opened.
I used a bit of jargon in the previous paragraphs so let's backtrack a little with a miniscience
lesson. First of all what is quantum mechanics? To put it simply, quantum
mechanics is the theoretical framework that describes the universe at the “smallest” scales:
atoms, electrons, protons, quarks, etc. At such small scales, the “rules” are very different
from the rules of the macroscopic world which is described by classical mechanics. Take,
for example, an ordinary baseball. According to classical mechanics, the baseball has a
definite trajectory (position and momentum) at any given time and we can theoretically
predict the position of the baseball at a later time if we know its trajectory at an earlier time.

This seems to conform to our common sense notion about how everyday objects that we
see around us should behave. However, when we are dealing with small objects (e.g.
electrons), quantum physics tells us that such common sense no longer applies. At the
quantum level, we must describe an object by its state vector.
Suppose, for example, that we wanted to know the position of such a microscopic object.

According to quantum physics, the object has no definite position until it is measured. In
fact, before its position is measured, we can think of the object as having a probability of
being in any possible position available to it (this idea, by the way, is one of the central
tenets of the Copenhagen interpretation). This probability distribution is described by the
state vector which, by convention, is represented by the Greek letter Ψ (psi). In this case,
Ψ describes the object's possible positions.

As you may have surmised from the name, state vectors are examples of mathematical
objects called vectors. To be more precise, they are vectors in a complex vector space
called a Hilbert space, but we won't get into that here. The important point is that different
vectors can be added together to give another vector. So for example, if Ψ and Χ are two
different vectors, then Ψ + Χ would be another vector. Vectors can also be multiplied with a
(complex) number to give another vector so if Ψ is a vector, then cΨ would be another
vector (where c is a number). Physicists have adopted a notation for these state vectors
(called bra-ket notation) in which each vector is denoted by a symbol in angled brackets can
be written as ΙΨ> + ΙΧ> and the multiplication of a vector by a number can be written
as c ΙΨ>.

Now let's see this bra-ket notation in action for a simple example. Suppose we have a
microscopic particle whose state vector for position is Ψ and it is expressed as the
weighted sum of two other vectors

ΙΨ> = c ΙA> + d ΙB>.

What this expression says is that the particle can be in two possible positions, A or B.
Before measuring the position, the particle cannot be thought of as occupying any of the
two positions. We can only say that it has a probability of being in either of the two
positions. Physicists would say that the particle is in a quantum superposition of the two
positions. The numbers c and d are called probability amplitudes. The square of the
probability amplitudes (actually the squared moduli) gives the probability of finding the
particle in that position after measurement. In this case, if we measured the particle's
position, the probability of finding it in position A would be |c|2 and the probability of finding
it in position B would be |d|2. The amplitudes are usually “adjusted” so that their squares
sum to 1 but that's another detail which I won't get into here. The process by which the
state vector representing the superpostion of different states reduces to a single state is
referred to as state vector reduction (it can sometimes be referred to as wavefunction
collapse). The idea of the reduction of the state vector is another one of the central
aspects of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum physics.

Now let's apply what we've learned so far to poor Schrödinger's cat. We know that the
cat can be in two possible states: live or dead. Let ΙΨ> be the state vector and suppose
that the probability of finding a dead cat is ½ and that the probability of finding a live cat is
½. Then one possible way to express the state vector is

ΙΨ> = (1/√2) Ι live cat> + (1/√2) Ι dead cat>.

So there you have it. Now you understand the equation in the first panel of the comic;
but what about the equation in the last panel? The symbol є is generally used by
mathematicians to represent an infinitesimal quantity. Hence, the equation in the last panel
expresses the idea that there was an infinitesimal chance that an angry monkey could
have magically appeared in the box.

This comic is based on the idea of a fine-tuned universe. The notion of a fine-tuned
universe, in turn, is based on the idea that the universe is the way it is because of the
precise values of certain fundamental constants and that even slight variations of any of
these constants would result in a universe that is radically different. To be specific, it is
implied that any such universe would most likely not be conducive to the existence of
matter or elements as we know them and hence to the existence of life as we know it.
Many people (so I hear) consider this remarkable “fine-tuning” of the universe to be
evidence that suggests the existence of a divine being of some sort managing a cosmic
fine-tuning machine. I leave you, the reader, to draw your own conclusions, but whatever
your opinion may be, I hope that you will learn two very important lessons from this comic:
1.) Always obey the Lord, and 2.) beware of angry monkeys.

"It's so tragic it makes Hamlet look like 3-2-1 Contact!" That's a great line. I lol'd.

It's the best line I've read/heard since this one in Ironman 2:
Spoiler: "[This missile] is so smart it could write a book — a book that would make Ulysses look like it was written in crayon."

Through the pain, frustration, and confusion doled out in generous quantities by the gaming industry, sometimes a gem will emerge. Jeremy Vinar and Mike Fahmie met during the creation of one such gem, Superman Returns DS. It was during this time they devised their mad plan to create a web comic, below is the actual conversation:
Jeremy: You're Funny.
Mike: ...
Jeremy: We should make a webcomic!
Mike: ...
A mere 3 years later Mike answered Jeremy's challenge and Virtual Shackles was born. Their comic, an exploration of video games and the world of video game development, follows the careers of Orion and Jack as they inexplicably remain at a company that neither values nor appreciates their effort (or lack thereof).
