‘Techno Tuesday’ began as an exercise in drawing comics and complaining. In fact it still is, after it’s inception in January of 2006. The comic, which is based on technology and the modern world, originally appeared on the Fabrica blog. It has since been published elsewhere online as well as in print in places like Adbusters Magazine, Clark Magazine, The Portland Mercury and more. It has also been exhibited at Lift in Switzerland, and the Pompidou Centre in Paris. The comic has been running weekly in the Russian magazine F5 since 2008.

author's comments:
I signed a contract with San Min Book Co. to have my comic titled, 'Generation Gap' published in a Taiwan textbook called 'Consumers' Behavior'. This is the second time this image has been published in a textbook, the last time in France. Apparently this illustration translates across many cultures.

Jetée, I found your posts 108, 109, 111 to be particularly funny. Great finds.

Jetée 06-28-2010 07:55 PM

Dude, (a word I have not utilized in a few months now, by the by) all I need is a sprinkling more comments like these, spaced throughout the dozens upon dozens of microblogging-type threads I have adopted here, continued throughout the tenure in which I meticulously contribute toward & maintain them, for no discernible reason other than to just share exceptional quality pieces with a centralized theme to 'em, then have said comments be of general well-meaning kudos, finally will I feel all warm and glittery with praise, and perhaps feel actual accomplishment as well, as I do here, now, a little bit, after reading your response above.

As it is though, from the now half-year experiment I've undergone with this, do I now notice how significantly the vocal community here has shrunk over the years.

With the creation of "Strange Brew," Deering now has an outlet for his creative sense of humor and quirky view of life. "Being an editorial cartoonist today, you have to be tuned-in to pop culture as well as politics -- but there are some limits to what you can do," Deering says "In Strange Brew, everything's fair game. I get to cut loose and draw anything."

As an editorial cartoonist, Deering has received numerous honors. Winner of the National Press Foundation's 1997 Berryman Award, Deering also gained top honors in the 1994 national John Fischetti Cartoon Competition and was the seven-time winner of the Arkansas Press Association's Best Editorial Cartoonist award. Born in Little Rock in 1956, Deering has been drawing since his childhood fascination with science fiction and dinosaurs -- subjects he made into comic books. After studying art with Truman Alston, Deering focused on commercial and fine at the University of Arkansas. At the Democrat-Gazette, Deering advanced from layout artist to editorial cartoonist in 1981-82. His promotion to chief editorial cartoonist in 1988 made his cartoons the state's best-known.

The Joy of Tech is a comic about technology and pop culture, created by Nitrozac and Snaggy, and updated three times a week. We like to feature the people and events that are making today's tech news.

We've been making comics on the web since early 1999, and The Joy of Tech will soon celebrate its 10th anniversary. We're very proud to be featured regularily on places like AllThingsD (from the people who publish The Wall Street Journal), PC Live Magazine, and many others, both on the web and in print.

We currently live on Vancouver Island, Canada, where we have a lovely perspective of the silicon valleys to the south. We make The Joy of Tech using Apple computers, mostly on our MacBook Pros, running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. We use software from Apple, Adobe, BBedit, OpenOffice.org, and others, including Microsoft (yep, we do use Microsoft Office for Mac on occasion). Nitrozac uses a Wacom tablet to draw her illustrations.

Peanuts is a syndicated daily and Sunday comic strip written and illustrated by Charles M. Schulz, which ran from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000 (the day after Schulz's death), continuing in reruns afterward. The strip is considered to be one of the most popular and influential in the history of the medium, with 17,897 strips published in all, making it "arguably the longest story ever told by one human being", according to Professor Robert Thompson of Syracuse University.

It has been described as "the most shining example of the American success story in the comic strip field", ironically based on the theme of "the great American unsuccess story": the woes and trials of the meek, nervous, and self-confidence-lacking main character, Charlie Brown.

(and it just happens to be the episode where Mr. Feeny shows up at the college. He was posing as a student first (trying to warm up to the Dean). Creepy, man. I watched for 5 minutes, then realized I was already 10 years too old when this show was airing then, so I convinced myself it's not worth investing memories and recapitulations to something I'd just as soon like to forget. Who's the creepy one now?)

For those of us pedantic enough to want a rule, here it is: The preferred form is "xkcd", all lower-case. In formal contexts where a lowercase word shouldn't start a sentence, "XKCD" is an okay alternative. "Xkcd" is frowned upon.

xkcd.com updates without fail every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Doctor Fun is a cartoon, single-panel, with a wacky gag and colorful artwork. Not all Doctor Funs may be suitable for children and some childlike adults.
Doctor Fun is something, but it's not an alternative comic. I made the mistake once of sending some Doctor Funs to some alternative newspapers.

Quote:

Wiley Miller started his career as an editorial cartoonist with the Greensboro, N.C., News and Record in 1976. Six years later, he created his first syndicated comic strip, "Fenton," and returned to editorial cartooning in 1985. His current series, "Non Sequitur," is the only comic to win a Reuben in its first series of syndication; its unique flexible format has also made it the only comic to win in both the comic strip and comic panel categories.

Wiley Miller's past recognitions include being named Best Editorial Cartoonist by the California Newspaper Publishers Association in 1988, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism award for editorial cartooning in 1991. Today, he continues to meet and surpass his personal goal: "Produce the funniest, best-drawn cartoon possible, regardless of theme, subject matter or setting."

Fizzboomski the Anarchist by Walter Bradford

Quote:

Inspired by the drama of the Russian Revolution, Bradford dreamed up his bungling anarchist, Fizzboomski (ne Fitzboomski), whose assassination plots are constantly foiled by elaborately comic countermeasures; his targets, the Czar and the Prime Minister, forever one step ahead. The humor is pretty dark for the Sunday funnies, but the feature hardly takes itself seriously. Along with the madcap antics of the titular star we're treated to those familiar jabs at Russia, you know, ending words in "-ski" or referring to the Prime Minister as the "Prime Minister-a-vitch." Sometimes I worry you folks must think I live under a rock, but I will admit that I was surprised to see that sort of humor so early in the 20th Century (I think of that sort of silliness as more of a Cold War thing, but here it is).

It's funny you should mention those exact three, as I just went back to find them, and found out 2 of the 3 (plus 1 in-between) had broken. They are now fixed, and re-direct-link'd!

I have a feeling I used that "non-official" image-hoster in many other spots and locales, so I just heaped more work upon myself locating the broken IMGs, and replaing them. (It's a good thing I attribute everything, as it only takes 15 seconds now, instead 5+ min. without)

I'm off (to conquer my mistakes, I guess).

When I was a kid, I drew cartoons all the time. I drew cows and alligators and pigs and superheroes. I drew a platypus named Ed. I drew a dead dog named Dead Dog Bob. I drew everything I saw and everything I wanted to see.

Many years passed. By a strange series of coincidences, I found myself working in an office. The more I used a keyboard, the worse my penmanship became. The constant hum of computers made my brain twitch. That’s when I stopped drawing cartoons.

Then the chickens came.

Like some sort of haunting supernatural force, the chickens bubbled up from the ol’ subconscious mind. In a trance-like state, I drew them on office whiteboards. I drew them in notebooks. I drew them on anything that sat still long enough. People started asking, “Who’s drawing those damn chicken cartoons everywhere?”

The chickens were unstoppable. To retain my sanity, all I could do was grab a stack of sticky notes, and release the Savage Chickens.

author's comments: You knew it was coming, and now it has happened. The yearly turkey comic has come and gone, like the mailman, or a minor infectious disease.

See you again next year, turkey!

The above comic was illustrated by Alex, on a Thursday.
Quote:

Buttersafe is updated with a new comic every Tuesday and Thursday. These comics will have pictures and probably some words. Nothing else is guaranteed.

—–

Each comic is lovingly handcrafted by one of these two men:

Raynato Castro (usually Tuesdays): Ray’s lifelong goal is to some day master the one-inch punch. He can perform the two-inch punch. However, the density of air and the distance of the earth from the sun limits its effectiveness in most practical cases (e.g. demolishing buildings, defeating claw-fisted drug lords, knocking on really big doors, aiding choking babies).

In the meantime, Ray spends his days at the foot of a waterfall, training.

Alex Culang (usually Thursdays): Alex is a rusty button.

—–

Arthur Culang takes care of almost all of the business and technology issues and generally keeps Buttersafe from imploding, exploding, or sidesploding.

It just leads to the idea that either your love is pure,

author's comments:
I originally had a narrative for this comic. It said, “After a long day of saving the galaxy… Samus Aran likes to lay back and relax with-” But while I was putting the comic together, I decided that it worked better with just the humming of the “personal massager.”

So, I haven’t got a chance to pick up Metroid: Other M yet. I’ve heard that a lot of people like it and I’ve also heard people complain that Samus talks too much and isn’t nearly butch enough for their likings. As I said, haven’t pick it up yet. So if you have played it and you have an opinion on the matter, please don’t hesitate to post it below. It’ll help me decide when and if I finally pick it up… But odds are it will still be when.

I could've sworn I had posted this, if at least in TLTE! but I came away empty-handed. It sucks when you know you have something, where to find as well, but come away with nothing, possibly feeling worse than you did when you began with nothing in the first place.
