hasn't Star Wars become so ingrained in our culture that it is impossible for it to be counter-culture?

Punk.of.Ages 01-23-2010 09:17 PM

I believe that was discussed on page 1 or 2...

I finally realized why I titled this thread the way I did: Sion, you are right. Star Wars, and all affiliates that derive thereover from, have, indeed, become so extraordinarily widespread and seen throughout that it now has become commonplace in nearly any culture worldwide to know of this iconic futuristic film series. It is virtually impossible, now 30+ years later, to be in a discussion that revolves around the theme and have one person chime up and say, "But I've never heard of this rubbish before!". Straight liar.

But, when the film trilogy was first flourishing, the diehard fans of the genre were seen as outsiders, geeks, and, in some circles, dweebs. It took decades upon decades of continued rallying for this once "counter-culture", once reserved for the sometimes-too-passionate adolescent who may or may not have enjoyed laser light shows in their basement, to become a mainstay of our now popular culture, where we have anyone from the age of 4 to 74 joining in to, I don't know, marathon the films every 4 years or so.

Simplified: It's an ironic twist in the title of what the history once was, and trying to recapture it, modern day.

Love it, bobby. True thanks for sharing it here.

This must be kismet (ot just really good timing on my part, as per usual when living to the last minute), but I just happened upon this photo four minutes ago.

Turns Out There's Something Darker Than The Dark Side

Having a zombie overload?

You still might want to save some room for the "zombies in the Star Wars universe" book, Death Troopers,
which came out (sometime in Mid-October). It turns out stormtroopers and zombies do mix. Spoilers below.

The storyline for Death Troopers is pretty simple, really — an Imperial prison barge, during the years right before the original Star Wars movie, runs into some engine trouble. Good thing they find a Star Destroyer in the middle of nowhere, which they can cannibalize for parts. Unfortunately, the Star Destroyer has some kind of weird virus on board, which kills everyone it comes into contact with... and the people who die don't stay dead. And that's about it. The survivors from the prison barge have to run a gauntlet of Imperial zombies and try to escape in one piece, while facing their own personal traumas and uncovering a sinister biological weapons program that comes straight from Lord Vader himself.

Hardware Wars!

I first saw this on a 16mm film reel borrowed from the Library for a birthday party when I was a kid in the early 80's.

I think it holds up pretty well!

No problem. I'm glad that other members have contributed enough material here to make it seem like a great commons for the very best of whatever could be 'Star Wars' related, like the following:

Star Wars Gangsta Rap: Chronicles | animated music video | Atom Originals | Atom

it really is hard to describe how much I loved the above piece. I thought it was gonna be super corny, even though it does have that cheeseball effect to it in the beginning, the producers of the rap really embraced it to make this video, really larger than life. The lyrics are what really draws you in, progressivel becoming more complicated and so character-driven, especially when all the appropriate voice cues are laid down for them; the animation, though, (for me) is a bonus throughout. This would have made a great single regardless.

here is a one minute youtube preview of the 'SWGR: C'...
but if you can, you must really expose yourself to the full-length song. Galactic gangsta genius, I tell you.

great bonus addition: if you go offsite to the youtube video above (oh, you'll have to seeing as how they have disabled the video embedding feature; just click the the title of the video, real simple) it has the full lyrics to the rap, plus a compilation of 3 websites' videos that have all featured the song, either in a new animation, or as a fan response.

LEGO Millenium Falcon (heavily-custom-modified)

Author's synopsis: (heavily-modified by me correcting spelling/grammaticial errors)

The UCS Millennium Falcon from LEGO is brilliant, and outstanding in terms of detail, but I was disappointed seeing the lame interior, so I built the model from the ground up, and adding a full movie-accurate detailed interior, along with some lights.

The work isn't finished I'm still working on the backlights-engine and some other details, so...

I hope you enjoy!

"Goodnight Forest Moon" by Noah Dziobecki

Quote:

Dilemma: The first birthday of our friends’ child was approaching, and little Alaster already had more than enough stuffed animals and blinking, beeping electronic doo-dads.

Solution: Ignore work for three or four days and illustrate a Star Wars-themed take-off on a beloved children’s book instead.

Added bonus: It will also make a great gift for our own forthcoming Little One.

Result: I think the parents liked it more than Alaster, who was probably still reeling from his first sugary birthday cake experience. And I’m not sure, but I may have detected traces of jealousy on the faces of other parents in the room.

However, rather than publish and sell copies of this as was suggested, I’m much happier releasing it freely to the world. The catch: you have to print and assemble it yourself. But don’t worry, I won’t leave you high and dry...following are step-by-step instructions to produce a good quality book with a minimum of fuss.

Grab the PDF of the book here.

I don't want to have to get back into this, but I asked both The_Jazz and Cynthetiq not to include the [NFSW] tag in the title of this thread, and if any 'questionable moral' content should arise, it should be up to the original poster to either post the photo as a link with a short description, or to post the picture inside the [hide="title"][ /hide] tags.

Also, I'm not a fanboy of either franchise, but most "Star" afficiandos don't like when the other encroaches on their turf. (Star trek bodypainting in a SFW Star Wars thread seems like a double faux-pas, but I don't mind it much).
