okay, this for any of you guys that work as personal trainers, etc (plan9, i'm looking in your general direction)...
when you're with a client, how do you determine what exercises they do, frequency, intensity, speed, etc. for them to work at?
i'm trying to figure out a workout plan for myself, and i want to do more than just "run for 30 minutes or 2 miles".
thanks

We do a basic health assessment of the clients. There are many factors that go into what kind of exercises and the intensity in which they will be performed such as age, current health, diabetes, arthritis, HIV/AIDS, Hypertension, Obesity, Cardiovascular Disease, Asthma, Osteoporosis, Menopause, Pregnancy, etc.
Also We must be made aware of of all medications the client ingest and also know what impact on the training process it will have as well. If we are unsure of special considerations in dealing with a particular problem or disease we discuss with a physician (usually theirs) on any special considerations regarding that particular issue.
When evaluating somebody we also take into consideration the clients goals. We have to evaluate the person's posture, balance, stability, mobility, and strength during the first few sessions in order to get a good idea on where they stand physically.
These are just some of the things in which we do when starting off with a new client, which is why sometimes I am tentative in giving advice here on the forums because I do not know enough about each one of you and could possibly be giving the wrong advice at times. This is also why sometimes I react harshly in correcting some people who like to throw out answers quickly without thinking of the possible repercussions of the advice that they give.
Hope that helps. Sorry, I have been sort of taking a break from the health forums the past few weeks
