If it's a standard case fan you want to connect it to this:
A normal ATX connector, this is probably what you wan't to connect to.
The four pronged thing you see is probably a Male ATX connector.
If it looks like this however:
You want to connect it right to the motherboard:
This type of plug is usually used for proc HSF's and other monitored fans.
