I agree with the picnic... Yes, it's Boston but... you can take her to an art gallery, a museum or the symphony...
Keep it simple. You don't need to overwhelm her (as others have suggested). Go too big and you risk looking like an overbearing fool.
Make something for her. If you write, write her a poem. If you draw, draw her a picture.
If all else fails, a nice dinner at a resaurant you can afford, flowers and then off to the theatre (don't take her to the movies, it isn't romantic enough, don't know why the theatre is romantic it just is)
