I brewed for a number of years - my first couple of batches pretty much sucked, but after 3-4 they started to get good - the biggest advice I can give you is don't get hung up on trying to brew the strongest beer you can. They can be tricky and they take a long time to become drinkable. Also use pure liquid yeast cultures - that makes the single biggest difference in the taste of homebrew. The difference between liquid and dry yeast is much bigger than the difference between extract and whole-grain beer.
