Oh, no doubt that there's no beating the original FFT, but FFTA is definately a good game. The graphics are kiddish and stuff, but you'll get over it really fast I promise. Oh, and the 4 a.m. thing is SOOOOO true.
I know nothing about one for PS2, but in my circle of friends, I'm sure I would have heard something if there was a reliable rumor out there. So, I doubt there'll be one any time soon, :'(.
