I have an iPod and I'm using Windows XP. After you get it set up, you'll be able to plug the iPod into any XP machine and use it as an external harddrive.

To put music on the iPod (to listen to on the iPod), you have to use iTunes for XP. This is because the iPod keeps its own internal database of its music catalog.

You can drag mp3 files onto the iPod using the "external hard drive" functionality, but you won't be able to listen to them unless you use iTunes to put your music on the iPod. (Even with iTunes, it's as simple as a drag n' drop.)
