Quickie iPod Question

When using an iPod, do you have to transfer files through another program, or can you simply drag-and-drop and essentially use it as an external hard drive?

I'm using WinXP.

When you connect it to the computer it will sync up your music (unless you turn it off and manually move in iTunes). I believe it also mounts as that is how you use the HD function but to my knowledge you can not move music over and play it this way.

I have not used a iPod on either OS so I'm not sure. Tried looking on apples site?

IIRC, you cant do that with music, but you can with data files (to back things up and so on).

if your really having trouble try MacOpener its not free but its one easy (read throw money at it) solution.

its becoming a bit of a problem with these and this software has helped with these "glitches" for the PC users and then theres the battery issue

best of luck

I have an iPod and I'm using Windows XP. After you get it set up, you'll be able to plug the iPod into any XP machine and use it as an external harddrive.

To put music on the iPod (to listen to on the iPod), you have to use iTunes for XP. This is because the iPod keeps its own internal database of its music catalog.

You can drag mp3 files onto the iPod using the "external hard drive" functionality, but you won't be able to listen to them unless you use iTunes to put your music on the iPod. (Even with iTunes, it's as simple as a drag n' drop.)

You dont have to use iTunes--I use EphPod to run mine, and old versions of the iPod come with MusicMatch Jukebox. You don't need iTunes to run it--but you do need some kind of software to write the songs.

I dont have an Ipod but i use a archos, similiar but not exactly. It came with music match jukebox but i choose not to use it. I use it as an external harddrive sometimes because my music selection is rather slim. All you have to do is install the usb drivers and it acts as a harddrive. You dont need any software for ipod. Drag and rop music/even folders to keep it clean and organized.
