I've played seriously since about 1989. Gone through a number of cues, but I am currently using a Mali and a McDermott (break cue). Up until about five years ago, Friday and Saturday nights were at the pool hall. I didn't play nine for money, since the people I would have played were my friends, and the head to head thing just didn't play out. Instead we played Harrigan at a buck a game. Been up, been down. Whatever.
For the past ten years I have been playing eight in a bar league (APA). It's not for money, only trophies - although they do have an annual tournament in Vegas were there is money on the line.
I do have to agree that the "regular" bar players do lack skill, but if it is a bar league, you can see some tight shooting. I used to scoff at the players on my team who had only played in a bar, until one guy would consistently beat me, and he had only ever shot in a bar. I came to realize, that although I knew the shots and the positions, I was overthinking the shots. Straight and simple usually beats three rail shots.
