Tilted Pool Players?
Anyone else here addicted...
....what're your fav pool halls? .....what do you play with? .....what's the most you've ever lost/won? - by the way I won a maserati on one shot before, this drunk rich guy was sweating his balls off, telling me I could drive down to Florida with him the next day to pick it up (it was at his parents house), i let him sweat it out for a little bit 'cause it was fun, and then let him off the hook. I don't bet anymore, i haven't lost really big money (cause i don't play for it, but i've lost a lil over 100 in one night). Now i've also won over 100 before, twice, and one guy tried to pay me back in weed (yeah right), and another guy just took the fuck off. I don't play for money anymore. ...what's your fav game? and anything else you want to add.... |

I suppose i should answer my own questions....
Gentleman's in Baltimore is my favorite pool hall. I play with a run of the mill Meucci (my 3rd one, I tend sometimes to get frustrated with the game and give my cues away, maybe cause their just Meucci's in the 2-300 range and i've gotten my use out of them, and made a couple new player really happy), but my dream cue is a nice Scruggs with maybe a predator shaft. 9 ball's my game, it's the only one i know really well and is usually the most convenient to play. I love straight pool though when i find someone else who is willing to play for the fun of it. |

I play at Moorpark Billiards.. it's a nice, quiet place about 15 min from me. I play with a Viking cue and my game is 9-ball, though my recent stint of lacking opponents has driven me to play more and more 8-ball, which I seem to be better at... hmm.
I don't bet ever. I do it all for the nookie. Yeah... http://www.tba-ownz.org/img/cue/cue01.jpg

9-ball was always the game I made money in. 8-ball is just fun. I litterally paid my drinking/fun money for a few years when I was playing religiously. I stopped playing when I got my favorite cue stolen from under my nose at some bar. I play maybe a few games a week and still am better then the majority, but have definately lost a lot of my old skills. Pool is not like riding a bike... you take time off and it will definately show.

no frickin doubt....i've been playing at bars way too much lately, does nothing for your game. But like you, in college i played and drank for free my junior and senior year. Even in bars nowadays though, seems like alot less people are even willing to play for a beer.

..."Playing off the Rail" is a really good book about some guy who used to be really good, got married, quit playing, got divorced, couldn't play anymore but had money and took some player from california all across the US to hustle (true story), they even came to a few pools halls that i used to go to in Baltimore and described how crappy the scenery was. Didn't do much for baltimore, but it was true enough - at least the area they were in.

I've played seriously since about 1989. Gone through a number of cues, but I am currently using a Mali and a McDermott (break cue). Up until about five years ago, Friday and Saturday nights were at the pool hall. I didn't play nine for money, since the people I would have played were my friends, and the head to head thing just didn't play out. Instead we played Harrigan at a buck a game. Been up, been down. Whatever.
For the past ten years I have been playing eight in a bar league (APA). It's not for money, only trophies - although they do have an annual tournament in Vegas were there is money on the line. I do have to agree that the "regular" bar players do lack skill, but if it is a bar league, you can see some tight shooting. I used to scoff at the players on my team who had only played in a bar, until one guy would consistently beat me, and he had only ever shot in a bar. I came to realize, that although I knew the shots and the positions, I was overthinking the shots. Straight and simple usually beats three rail shots.

Had a pool table since I was like 5, when my father bought one.
When I started to go to pool halls at 14, people thought that I would be an easy target to take money from. Sorry bastards didn't know what hit them when I started to play 9 ball for money. Although this was a cheap town, the most I ever won was around $40. The most I ever lost was abotu $20. Went through hell getting this one tub of shit to pay up on a $15 loss. Came in 4th in a Snooker tournament. Probably would have made 3rd place but had one of the worst off-days ever. Oh, and there is no way I would have let that guy off. I would have taken that Maserati. If I lose I pay up, no matter what the loss. I expect the same from my opponent. |

...yeah, the Maserati thing, the guy was just drunk and insisting the shot was impossible and started going into the laws of physics and crap. The object ball was in between the 1st and 2nd diamond on the rail, and the cue ball was about at the 1st diamond on the opposite end of the table, and i rolled it into the nearest corner pocket so it was more than a 90 degree cut. I forgot to mention to the guy that the laws of physics don't take into consideration rail first shots. He didn't insist i put anything up. I should have just told him before the shot, screw the maseratti, we'll both put 20 bucks on the line, but the look on his face was worth not winning anything. Ya can't take advantage of some beligerant drunk guy in a bar. Plus he was a little "off", so there wasn't any way in hell i was getting in a car with him for a 20 hour drive.

I used to go to a couple local bars in Chicago (the Oasis for example) when I was in school there.. graduated this past December and moved back to the DC area so I havent gone out to play pool yet.
But, in Chicago we usually just stuck to 8-ball in-between the various dart games we'd play (I was in league there). |

I was addicted to playing pool. After awhile though, it kinda gets boring. Now i just play every once in awhile so that way it stays fun. Im not looking to turn into Mizerack or anything like that. If i do play, i like to go to "Leisure Times" in my town. Never owned my own cue. If i ever bought one, i would get a Meucci. The most ive won before was $180. My friend had a kegger at his house. We were on teams together and took out all the people that came over to his party (we were drunk too). But the game to play is nine ball. All about the position...

I grew up with a table in my house, so I learned how to play at a young age. It was always fun beating my dads friends.
Some joker tought me 9-ball and we play on a fairly regular basis now. I let him win once in a while, just so he wont cry.

When I was a kid I used to slip into this old pool hall downtown, the kind where it was always dark and had neon beer signs on the window. They wouldn't normally let me play but I'd set up the racks for them and the players would toss me a nickel or dime.
Later, when I was in the Navy I started hanging out at all of the topless bars off base which sometimes had pool tables. This was a good place to learn both the physical and mental aspects of pool. Went thru this period of hanging out at the various billiard halls as I lived in several cities. Eventually you come to a point that you realize you are not a natural (like the guys on ESPN). I was a good player but not to the level of a touring pro. Now I just mostly play on my home table for fun. Great stress relief. I've had several cues over the years. Had a Mucci for 13 years untill it was stolen. Now my primary cue is a Predator with a 314 shaft. Also have a Joss and a J. Pechauer. They are beautiful cues but I seldom use them. I still love pool but don't get competitive about it as when I was younger. The great thing about havng a home table is that you can get up at 2 am (or anytime) and practice without having to go to a club. |
