Why is a loss at the end of the year more pertinent than a loss at the beginning? Because in the human polls a team that loses has to slide lower than the teams that won for that week. Just like USC slid a few notches when it lost to that powerhouse team from Berkeley. How can a team that loses to Cal claim to be better than any other team?
Facts:
OU - 1 loss to a highly ranked team (K-state)
LSU - 1 loss to a highly randed team (Florida)
USC - 1 lost to an unranked team (Cal)
OU - very high strength of schedule points
LSU - very high strength of schedule points
USC - lost points due to weak strength of schedule
USC is in one of the largest media generating areas of the country (if not the largest) and this is the only reason that anyone keeps this argument going.
The only national championship acknowledged by the NCAA members is the BCS champion - NOT the human biased poll winner.
Ladies and gentlemen, please meet the NCAA College Football National Champions - the LSU Tigers!!!!!!!!

You know, the media conspiracy thing is really old and a poor argument. They've tried to pin that on the NBA before too with the Lakers, give me a break. The AP writers are from all over the country anyways, so how could a regional bias affect them all? Are the coaches in a big conspiracy too, we know damn well that they would have voted USC number 1 if they could have. Even with a contractual obligation to vote LSU number 1, USC still got 3 first place votes, and was number 1 at the end of the season with 37/63 first place votes.
Also, if you go to
www.ncaafootball.net, an official NCAA site, they herald both teams. The NCAA will not officially give anyone a trophy for the Div I-A title.
And trying to pump up Florida (24th in AP poll and 25th in the coaches poll) as a 'highly ranked opponent' is flawed too. Florida finished 8-5 and beat LSU at home. Granted, Cal is an inferior team to Florida, but they showed up for a bowl game against Va Tech and finished 8-6. On top of that, it took them 3OT's to beat USC in Berkeley.
