how long did you have the earrings before taking them out?
i've had my ears peirced for over 10 years now, and when I take out the Earrings for months (and sometimes years) on end, I can still put them in.
Sometimes it just requires a little re-streaching of the skin and "tickles" a bit... don't know how else to describe it.
The hole in my nose also is the same way. haven't had a nose ring in, in years and just the other day i tried to put one in just to see if the hole stayed open and after a little fiddling, got it through.
Maybe it depends on the person though. I just know mine don't close up
