Well with LOTR the main reason I bought the DVDs when it first came out, and then the special editions is a simple one. The first release is the theatrical version which can be watched on one disc. The special edition has all the scenes implanted in the movie and you must switch discs half wya through. I guess im just weird and feel that getting both is necessary. Of course there are a few DVDs I own that have since had special editions released (Fargo, X-men, etc) that i will only pick up if i see it at a reasonable price used. Of course there is a clerks 10th anniversary edition coming out soon...i may have to pick that up
