Beating the DVD marketing strategy
I don't understand why people would consider buying a dvd (of some series) mid-series, when it's obvious that when the series is completed and all together, they'll release like the huge complete set with all this extra shit. More to the point, why peoepl end up buying both? like regular things released normally, and then a week or so later they get the super-dooper-extrastuff-re-release-remastered edition as well?
Maybe just wait it out a bit and get all the stuff at the end? The main examples i am thinking about at the moment, are The Matrix Trilogy and the Lord OF teh Rings Trilogy. IN about 6-8 months time, i imagine, we'll be seeing the super dooper boxed sets of all three with all extra special shit, which people (and namely collectors) love to get. Sure it's cool to buy the normal ones, if you're just interested in the movies, but i hope some people do realise that this is what's going to happen? (namely the ones, who are proned to throwing money around and end up buying, essentially the same thing, twice) So maybe just wait it out a bit..... |

I think the only thing you've mentioned that really applies to me are the Lord of the Rings movies. I have both theatrical and extended editions of both movies because, in my mind, they're different movies. Believe it or not, sometimes I would rather watch the theatrical version over the extended version.
If people have been waiting for a "super dooper boxed set" of The Matrix Trilogy, then they've been waiting an awfully long time to own the first movie. That was one of the first DVDs I owned. If it turns out they re-release it (actually, they announced a re-release once, but then canceled it. I'm sure they'll release it sometime), then I, for one, won't go out buying it. Incidentally, I don't think I'll be buying Reloaded or Revolutions anyway. I buy DVDs for the film, not the special features. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the special features, but I usually only watch them once and then forget about them. The exception to that are for audio commentaries. Here are some DVDs I bought before special editions were released: Memento Monty Python and the Holy Grail National Lampoon's Animal House National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation National Lampoon's Vacation Pulp Fiction There's Something About Mary True Romance The Usual Suspects X-Men I'm not going to be upgrading them anytime soon. So, I guess in answer to your original question. I'd rather own them now and not waste my time with the re-releases. |

there's some people that are completists and need to work the whole kit and kaboodle. IMHO I'm fortunate enough to work in the industry so I get DVDs all the time gratis.
But when I do buy, I do buy as wisely as I can because I have over 350 DVDs and I don't like to buy something that isn't worthwhile or knowing that another version is going to be coming out example the people who bought the Back to the Future set early got one that had some bad transfers, they fixed them but not in time for last year's holiday buying public. It's almost the same thing that they did for the VHS tapes, but this time their manufacturing costs are much much much less.

Well with LOTR the main reason I bought the DVDs when it first came out, and then the special editions is a simple one. The first release is the theatrical version which can be watched on one disc. The special edition has all the scenes implanted in the movie and you must switch discs half wya through. I guess im just weird and feel that getting both is necessary. Of course there are a few DVDs I own that have since had special editions released (Fargo, X-men, etc) that i will only pick up if i see it at a reasonable price used. Of course there is a clerks 10th anniversary edition coming out soon...i may have to pick that up

Haha funny you should bring this up SleepyJack, a co-worker and I were talking about how stupid this idea is the other day. He was talking about the lord of the rings extended version or some shit, and how they will release a extended version of each, then a boxed set of the normal versions, then boxed set of extended, after releasing each movie themselves in normal and extended format. I agreed and we continued working, making fun of the executive chef the whole night. It was fun.

I have been doing sales and marketing for the home video studios for many years now, and trust me when I say the studios welcome the stupidity of the average consumer.
The most amazing thing to me, is when the consumer KNOWS that a new or special edition is coming out, and they still purchase it twice. Dogma and the Lord of the Rings are two glaring examples that come to mind. In Canada, LotR is released by Universal Studios (they distribute New Line up here), and they actually did a consumer marketing campaign that explained that only 90 days later the extended version would be available. I would guess that a good 25% of the people who bought the millions of copies of the extended edition already owned the regular version... And don't even get me started on what Anchor Bay has done with the Evil Dead series - each time having it outsell the previous. Insane... |

I am of the type that wants the extended/special/directors cut editions only. for LOTR, I will eventually buy the complete trilogy of extended editions sometime late next year. In the meantime, I have downloaded the ext. eds of both the first two films to watch while I wait for the boxed set to come out.

Yeah, I hate to too. The only place they're gonna bite me on it is with LOTR. I've gotten the big boxed sets of the first two extended editions and will get the third.
Now, in the commentary on TTT, Pete Jackson kicks around the idea of, when all is said and done, releasing a chronological cut - That I would be into. He also talks about a ton of things that got left on the floor when they were done editing. If they do a criterion edition Brazil type job on the Trilogy, it will be mine and hang the cost. If they release the trilogy with extra-special super extended cuts, then I am all over that too (more Middle Earth is better). But LOTR is definitely a special case. I bought a lot of regular editions early, and I won't replace them with specials until they wear out. Even for stuff like Monty Python, which is within a whisker of as important to me as LOTR.

I kind of like it when they release to many editions of the same dvds. It generally causes the used dvd market to flood with copies allowing me to purchase for 50% off or more. I dont care how good it was I can wait.
