I'm sorry, but I don't think your trainer does know what he's talking about. That's just wrong.
Spotting is a well known and used practice of weight training. It helps you get over stuck spots in your lift and helps you eek out a couple of more reps, giving all your muscle fibers a chance to fatigue. Otherwise, your weakest muscle will always dictate progress.
Now, there is a responsibility to spotting. Spotting is MAINLY for safety, but that isn't the "active spotting" concern. I would also recommend not to complete more than a few reps with a spotter's help. If you did half a set with the spotter's help, then you're going about it wrong.
