CDs, if you know what kind of music they like. That always seems to work for me. That, or the idea about walking around the mall is a good way to go about it.
On a related note, (I hope you don't consider this threadjacking, it's just a sidenote) I'm not sure what would be an appropriate gift for a situation I'm in. There's a girl who I'm friends with, hoping for something more, but not sure if she is. What kind of present wouldn't be offensive, but is more than a friend to friend gift, but isn't like what a boyfriend would give? Don't answer if I'm breaking forum policy.
