Carbohydrate Loading
I've heard of a practice called "Carbohydrate Loading" where you gradually increase your carbohydrate intake while reducing your excercise over the course of a week or so. I think the idea behind it is to have a large supply of carbohydrates ready to burn by the end of the regimen.
I don't really understand how this works. Shouldn't your body be converting these extra carbs into fat? It also seems like it wouldn't be the most effective way to train for an important event. I've also read that it's not the safest practice and shouldn't be done without proper guidance, and even then should only be done a couple of times a year.
I'm not planning on doing this anytime soon, I'm just curious about how and why this works, if it actually does.
