How depressing. You'll probably enjoy the Mega Man X series more than the original Mega Man series.
The way you said "games for chilling with a few beers" I wouldn't suggest role playing games like the Final Fantasy series, Chrono Trigger, or Secret of Mana. They require you to get rather involved.
You might try Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Donkey Kong Country, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (although involved, it's a great game), Super Metroid, and Contra 3.
