I use the same rifle for deer and elk too, but I usually load a smaller weight for the deer. It shoots very flat. We have whitetail, blacktail and mule deer here.
I used my SKS last year for a deer. I bought a box of 123 gr for it and gave it a try. Now I can say I used it for hunting when someone asks "Why on earth do you need a gun like that"
A tag here costs $15(Canadian funds) for deer and $25 for moose and elk, bear are $5 I think and Grizzly are limited entry only. I guess you could shoot more than one or two, but who needs more than a thousand LBS of meat?
