Hunt this last Saturday....
So, modern rifle season opened in KY this past Saturday. My dad, his two bro's and I went out to a cabin we have in the mountains Friday night. It was by far the best hunting experience I have ever had. We killed four deer (3 does and 1 buck) in about 6 hours. The weather was great-about 35 degrees and sunny.
Yesterday (sunday) was spent in meat processing. These are the times I'll remember for the rest of my life. I'm very thankful for the freedoms we have in KY to experience nature and hunting. LSD |

So when hunting, how frequent/infrequent is contact with deer? Do you ever go hunting and come back empty handed? How do you bring home the massive weight? I mean you won't necessarily kill it someplace a truck can reach. /n00b

Seeing deer where we hunt isn't all that frequent. I usually only see one (the one I shoot). We come back empty-handed often, but never for an entire season. Whitetail deer weigh about 140 w/o entrails, so I drag them out and put them in my truck. Not a big problem. LSD |

Where were you hunting in KY? Up where I live I have seen plenty of dead ones on the side of the road and a couple of my friends got some this weekend.

I love hunting too, but I've had more luck with moose than deer. For me, it's the whole time out in the bush rather than the actual kill that gets me exited.
Nothing like watching a thousand pound animal walking towards you. My moose this year dressed at 720 lbs....not huge, but I'll take it.

After dressing, cut the animal in half and load onto a quad. We used a block and tackle setup to hoist him high enough to load. ![]() Back at camp finish quartering and skinning. There you go...almost two hunded pounds in a quarter. ![]() We managed to get two moose this year. Mine dressed at 720 and my friends was 840 lbs. It takes a bit more work than a deer, but the quality of the meat can't be beat...well I guess you could argue that Elk is better and I would probably agree.

Bummer. Here in KY we can take as many does as we want, you just have to keep buying more tags. 2 for 12.50. Good times. Do you use the 7mm mag on whitetail as well? I've heard good things about the catridge. LSD |

I used my SKS last year for a deer. I bought a box of 123 gr for it and gave it a try. Now I can say I used it for hunting when someone asks "Why on earth do you need a gun like that" ![]() A tag here costs $15(Canadian funds) for deer and $25 for moose and elk, bear are $5 I think and Grizzly are limited entry only. I guess you could shoot more than one or two, but who needs more than a thousand LBS of meat? Happy hunting dude.
