Purchasing pornography in Jefferson County is legal, but John Reneer is trying to shame some customers by photographing them from across the street, then publishing their pictures on his Web site, war-line.com.
Reneer has been targeting the store for nearly a week, and his motive may surprise you, WLKY NewsChannel 32's Maria Gum reported Monday. Reneer is a convicted felon, now on probation for armed robbery, sodomy and murder. Tuesday, he made it sound like he's learned from his punishment.
"I can't change what I've done," Reneer told Gum. "I'm not going to try and hide it. I'm just going to try to make a difference now."
In his campaign against porn, Reneer has spent plenty of time the last few days outside the store on Fern Valley Road, targeting those who buy magazines that promote the objectification of women, Gum reported.
"I'm not saying everybody that goes in there is going to come out a rapist," Reneer said. "I know that's not going to happen -- thank God -- but (porn) promotes it. They sell wrist restraints, and, you name it, they sell it."
Store owner Jeff Kleinhans said he's all for free speech, but what Renner is doing is wrong, Gum reported.
"When somebody wants to picket and protest, we deal with that," Kleinhans said. "That's fine. But when they start invading people's privacy by filming them and putting it on the Internet, they're crossing the line and inflicting emotional pain on somebody."
Reneer alleged that Kleinhans' business has been affected so adversely that things have become violent.
"We've had a big effect on them," Reneer said. "The owners have tried bribing me, scaring me, threatening me and assaulting me."
To protect his customers and keep Reneer off his property, Kleinhans said he had to install sprinklers and put up semi-trailers to block the camera's view, Gum reported.
"We've contained him to that corner, so he's still serving his purpose by filming people as they drive in and out," Kleinhans said.
Kleinhans added that considering his criminal record, Reneer himself poses more of a threat to society than any adult item in Kleinhans' store or those who frequent it.
