Adult Bookstore Employee Hoses Down Camera-Toting Protester
Porn Protester Hosed: James Zambroski Reports
By James Zambroski
(LOUISVILLE, October 30th, 2003, 10:30 a.m.) -- A battle over adult businesses heated up Wednesday night at an adult bookstore on Fern Valley Road when store employees hosed down a protester taping customers entering and leaving the business. WAVE 3 Investigator James Zambroski was there.
John Reneer is part of an anti-rape group. At the core of the group are victims of sexual assault who say adult businesses foster violence against women, so they're trying to shut them down by setting up a website (www.war-line.com) and posting pictures of people as they exit adult businesses.
Reneer and others have been adding photographs to the website for several weeks. Wednesday night, seated in a lawn chair outside the adult business on Fern Valley Road, Reneer explained how he had brought along lights to illuminate the business "so I can get a better camera shot."
He readily admits he hopes to shut down the businesses by humiliating customers and driving away other potential customers. "The ultimate goal would be to close them down if we can. They can't operate without customers."
Simple economics. And simple freedom. "I'm not restraining their trade," Reneer said. "We're not blocking anybody, we're not doing anything wrong. We have a right to be here. They have a right to be over there. We have a right to be over here if we want to be."
Naturally, the store's manager, Michelle, sees it differently. "He's running at people, at customers, trying to run them away. He's on our property, which is over there, our property line. And we can't get him off until I get the warrant."
Michelle explained that "this is just a normal business. We sell things just like any other store sells -- we sell movies. That's our main thing, movies and DVDs. Yes, we have adult novelties, but it is an adult store."
But then, one store employee found his own way to fight the protesters, spraying Reneer -- and his camera -- with a garden hose. Reneer never got up from his seat as he was being sprayed, nor did he stop taping. Meanwhile, Reneer's companion called police.
The guy with the hose left in a hurry, just minutes before Metro Police showed up. If caught, he could be charged with a misdemeanor. Reneer will have to swear out a warrant against the employee if he wants anything to happen, and he says he will be happy to do that.
It wasn't immediately clear whether or not Reneer's $800 digital video camera sustained any water damage, but he did tell us he was able to use it to try to get the license number of the man who sprayed him.
The store manager plans to file a lawsuit against the protesters.
