I went and tried turning the cooling fan, that wasn't turning easily, so I assume that's good.
I tried to "burp" the coolant system, and it didn't seem to have any effect at all -- I didn't see the coolant level go down in a noticable manner.
I'm not sure how to check the thermostat, or if it is even something I can check myself - I'll look in my Haynes manual for the car.
