They didn't. They wanted to cater to what they percieved as the prevalent opinion among their fans at the time, and upon realising that it was in fact not, they start backpeddling the shit out of their comments. Our evidence of this is in their tearful "please buy our stuff" interview on tv. Which has "bullshit" written all over it.
