Well put it this way. Do you know any friends in the military? If you have answered yes, how much information can you get out of them? I'm doubting you can get a lot. They are ordered to shut up, and they follow. If you saw alien life, the gov't would get on your ass and make sure you don't say a damn word. For various reasons at that.
The first is for a world wide Panic.
I mean do you really want the world to panic about alien life so close to our world? Perhaps we had nothing to worry about.. because in fact they haven't exactly taken over the world as we see it, so panic would have just been stupid.

Second? Perhaps that was merely gov't testing. Would you want word out to the world that the mission to the moon was merely a distraction.. while we were really there already setting up a base? If we didn't try to beat them, something woulda looked fishy, so it coulda simply been a distraction as well.

I'd say more, but those are actually pretty broad in and of themselves. I could give more, but you'll still have those two reactions somewhere... oh wait there is a third....

Third, The world at large things USA is shit. Complete Utter Shit. Would you want to risk panicking part of the world, while letting you reputation turn to shit as the rest of the world who isn't scare, now thinks you (the country) is insane? Not a good idea.

So there are the three broad categories, one of them would be bound to come up. If you can think of a fourth do tell and I'll see what I think, but it makes complete sense to me that things wouldn't have been said. Some things just won't be said and we have people around to enforce that. If you're willing to say there were aliens there.. and there are only so many people to back you up, AND you're risking your life to say it.. are you still willing? Not many people are.. which means even LESS people are there to back you up.. the odds start looking bad for you. I think it'd be amazing no matter what the reason was, but I understand completely why it isn't common knowledge.
