I've always found that you want your letter to stand out from the other applicants. For instance, when I applied for an internship at the capitol I told a humorous story about how I shared an elevator ride with Ted Kennedy and how it was my first realization that politicians are people, too. I then went into why I want the internship and my qualifications. Whatever you do, don't be boring. The person that sorts through the applications wants some humor or entertainment. Be tactful and don't mention how you spent your first night in jail and the way you were able to earn the prisoners respect by your knowledge of cars.
