Ohhhh no... their earlier albums were excellent, even their very first one (Karelian Isthmus) which was almost a straight death metal album. Their second album (Tales From the Thousand Lakes) is still death metal, but you can start to hear their transformation into a more melodic, progressive band.
I guess it all depends on the kind of music you like. If you like death metal, you'll like Karelian Isthmus and Tales From The Thousand Lakes, and if you like their more melodic progressive sound, you'll like Elegy and everything after (even though elegy has a LOT of death metal influence in it, it was definitely their transitional album into the style of music they do now).
