If you are running NT, 2000, or XP, and have NTFS, you can turn on auditing for the files being accessed. Go into properties for the file/directory, go to Security, Advanced, and you should see the auditing tab.

Add the desired users or EVERYONE, and select the types of accesses to log. The security log in event viewer should now show what is going on.

I don't know if XP Home has this ability.
