desire: 1 : to long or hope for
You need to eat, you need to sleep, you need to reproduce.
I think all spiritual practice revolves around fulfilling your potential as a human as much as possible. That would require a need for life in the eyes of Buddhists.
I personally think there is a very big difference between needs and desires
