2001: A Space Odyssey is a bit of an exception as the novel and the movie were conceived roughly at the same time, both being based on the same Arthur C Clarke short story. Kubrick and Clarke actually worked together, I believe.
So the film isn't an adaptation of the novel and the novel isn't an adaptation of the film, they evolved in syncronicity.
So I recall anyway, correct me if I'm wrong.
The best novelisation I ever read was Dick Tracy. Lousy film, great book. Pulp, pulp, pulp.
