One thing that seems to soothe me and leave me not so lost is a simple phrase "There is no such thing as coincidence." Teknophile, what happened here is very serious but you did the right thing. With your instinctual understanding of the "rules" it must have been very difficult to break from your usual pattern but you were forced to in that instance. I wouldn't have taken the chance either. One way to see this event is as the "reason" for this phenomenon is that you needed to avert the situtation with your son and that all the instances that happened before or may happen in the future will simply stand as the time that you did not follow the rules and all did not go as expected.
