building your own would be fun, but my bud decided to do that for the first time and he couldn't get it working. Called me. If you don't have anyone to go too that would suck. Mom and pop computer stores may build you one, but they will try to stick ass stuff in their unless you specify what you want, and their warrenties may be a little iffy.
An aquaintence of mine owns overdrivepc.com here in ga, and they can build you a good machine but I don't know about the price.
All in all, I don't want to give you an answer based on hate and emotion like some post above. Who cares what people think about other companies, the guy has a simple question.

That's a hell of a lot of money for a desktop (unless you use it for work)... are you counting monitors, etc.?
I don't know if I could spend that much money on one computer if I tried. Oh wait, I could.
