is stealing if you "give" him a digital copy. He can listen to it by coming round your house and listen to you play it on your CD/tape player.

It's not yours to give away if you haven't paid for it. Is that too complicated for you to understand? If you want to give "it" away, then you have to own "it".
The point here is that is it
not yours if you downloaded a copy. And it is
NOT yours to make a digital copy to share.
That is illegal.
What is the problem people have with this concept?
Sharing MP3's that are ripped from CDs is illegal. It is theft. It is
stealing. Now if you can accept that and have no ethical qualms about being a thief, then go ahead. But don't get all prissy and defensive when it is pointed out. This kind of childish behaviour annoys me. Soon someone will start squealing how "if CDs were cheaper then we wouldn't have to download MP3s.." or some such nonesense.
Hell, I can't afford a BMW, but I'm not going to go out and steal one.
Just because you don't like a law does
not mean you are above it. If you are a thief at least admit it.
