Broken Internet Explorer

My windows install is nearing its deathbed, but I have tons to backup, so until I get a second HDD I want to keep it on its feet as long as possible. Right now that means fixing the more serious errors I get.

The most annoying of these errors is that IE is broken - it refuses to "pop-up" windows. When dealing with things like email etc, this can be very annoying, and I have no clue as to why it happens.

It all started when, one magic day, I got a very odd error on startup - I can't remember the exact error, but it was something along the lines of "corrupt registry, windows has fixed this".

Apparently window's idea of fixing the registry is deleting half the entries. Tons of installed programs became "uninstalled", tons of wierd, random errors, windows startup now takes 2-3 minutes, etc etc etc. Really reformat material, but as I said, I want this install to last a while longer.

Is there any way to "re-install" explorer? Any ideas of what I can do?

Edit - gah, forgot to mention - running XP.
