Broken Internet Explorer
My windows install is nearing its deathbed, but I have tons to backup, so until I get a second HDD I want to keep it on its feet as long as possible. Right now that means fixing the more serious errors I get.
The most annoying of these errors is that IE is broken - it refuses to "pop-up" windows. When dealing with things like email etc, this can be very annoying, and I have no clue as to why it happens. It all started when, one magic day, I got a very odd error on startup - I can't remember the exact error, but it was something along the lines of "corrupt registry, windows has fixed this". Apparently window's idea of fixing the registry is deleting half the entries. Tons of installed programs became "uninstalled", tons of wierd, random errors, windows startup now takes 2-3 minutes, etc etc etc. Really reformat material, but as I said, I want this install to last a while longer. Is there any way to "re-install" explorer? Any ideas of what I can do? Edit - gah, forgot to mention - running XP. Last edited by billandted; 04-24-2003 at 03:39 PM.. |

Only thing I can think of is to do a repair of IE. start, control panel, add or remove programs look at IE and choose uninstall (?) one of the options should be repair. (Using XP take restore point first before doing this.)..
Next thing is to ditch IE and go for another browser.. (Search Threads). Sorry, but this sounds fairly terminal.

unfortunately i don't think that "removing IE from windows components" actually removes the program. it says that it 'removes access from the start menu'
you could try repairing the entire windows installation, booting off the XP disc. (??) i agree that this is the perfect opportunity to ditch smelly old IE!! ;-) |

For those of you who AREN'T running XP or 2KSr2 (all other windows, including 2KSr1)... you can remove IE entirely with the following: http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html I've been using it for years. It's especially good to use to remove the installation altogether... or to remove & reinstall it when it gets really hosed because of incompatible .dll levels. Removing and reinstalling on 98 machines will allow you to effectively remove the friggin active desktop, too. Last edited by MMM-A; 04-24-2003 at 05:05 PM.. |

You could try deleting the Internet explorer from the the program files directory. if you get access denied errors try removing the files from within and then run the IE setup again. It may detect the missing files and give you the option of reinstalling or repairing.?? Whats up with Microsoft....they have to make things so damn extranious...
