we all tend to assume that an unknown entity is of the same gender as us, until further information about them is acquired, or unless there are prior er, stereotypes i guess (i.e. its a pretty common stereotype that receptionists are young females).
An example: several years ago, i played diablo 2 with a female friend of mine. Anyway, we got up to the end act 2, and faced up against the major baddie, a slug like creature called Duriel. i remember her saying "ugh, shes ugly" or something like that, and i remember thinking that was curious because up until that point, i had always thought that Duriel was male.
odd, but true.
