I once read an interview with a spammer and he said something like if every 1 in 100.000 e-mails puts in a positive response, then the whole spam deal is lucrative...
They send out millions and millions of these each day and it costs them next to nothing. They won't stop unless they're disconnected... It is the cheapest way to advertise as far as I know.
I read your post, but for others: opening e-mails with online-content (pictures are common) allows spammers to know your adres is real and used. So if possible don't even load the images. Knowing an e-mail adres is real is profitable for them cause they can sell that 'guaranteed' recipient to other spammers.
