Spammers!

Today I was going through my spam folder when I realized we, as in all computer users of the world, need to unite on a single battle front. We need to launch a massive antispam campaign of some fashion against the assholes.
Between 11:55pm and 12:05am these spams came into my box:

I have one question: How is this making any profit? I mean how are these guys making any money off of this. I am not clicking on these emails reading them and responding. So I believe we need to educate people. We need to teach them not to open spam. If they don't this may make people realize that people are not reading spam so their product is not being advertised so they will stop.

Or

We can just hunt them down like the dogs they are and f*ck them untill they are dead.

Your thoughts, ideas, and opinions?

I once read an interview with a spammer and he said something like if every 1 in 100.000 e-mails puts in a positive response, then the whole spam deal is lucrative...

They send out millions and millions of these each day and it costs them next to nothing. They won't stop unless they're disconnected... It is the cheapest way to advertise as far as I know.

I read your post, but for others: opening e-mails with online-content (pictures are common) allows spammers to know your adres is real and used. So if possible don't even load the images. Knowing an e-mail adres is real is profitable for them cause they can sell that 'guaranteed' recipient to other spammers.

I believe there are laws comming into place to stop this shit, but I can't see it working. All they will have to do is move the base to somewhere in eastern europe or that general area and then the law won't apply. The most we can hope for is for ISPs to adopt a no spam policy and make effective blocking software.

Outlook 2003 disables the display of images etc. on a per email basis, so this little trick of the spammers will hopefully soon falter.

Using the Mail application on Mac, I can classify something as junk and then bounce it back to the sender. This hopefully makes them think that an address isn't there. I've only been doing it for a week or so though, and haven't noticed anything different yet.

I am running the Beta right now, and I noticed that. It is a pretty cool trick, now only if the had built in worm detection or fixed the security holes. However they do get props for the little transperant pop-up for new email.

This will most likely do nothing, as the spam originates from "dummy" accounts; ie, your bounced email is never read or acted upon.

No one actually maintains these spam lists actively. They just buy a CD with millions of emails addresses (literally), or use a random address generator, and then fire off thousands of unsolicited emails per minute.

No cure, until some of these guys get put in jail...

first you need to turn it on. Mail menu -> Junk mail -> Automatic.

Your probably still in training. As for trying to fool them Mr Mephisto is right the address will not solve the problem. But do but training mail as it learns from the contents of the emaili not just the sender.

If you are running Outlook, do a google for SpamBayes. It's a filter based on some previously discounted mathematical theories regarding probabilties. My work address was sold to a pr0n company, as was the addy of about 1/2 my current coworkers. SpamBayes kills about 99.75% of my spam.<p> I get about 100 spam a DAY at work. SpamBayes puts about 6-7 in a possible spam folder. The first few weeks I would catch a few emails from friends in that folder, but after subsequent "training" of the software, it has stopped doing so. There are a few annoyances, like not marking spam as read but it is worth it if you have a serious problem and are using Outlook.

Ack? It's not even worth the clicks? I guess I'll have to reserve that 'bounce' button for relatives then. Muaha.

Here is a great software package, I found. Worked great for me, I went from almost 200 pieces of junk mail a day to almost nothing...

It's "Mail Washer" I am not going to try to explain exactly what it does, just read the literature on their site. All I have to say is, it works...

I do know bouncing the email back as undeliverable did not work. Infact I swear I actually recieved more spam because of it.
