I've used cheats in CS before at LAN's with buddies and online. At the LAN's it was just fun to see how long it'd take for people to notice, you know just some goofing off. When I cheated online it was never because I wanted to be taken seriously and get great scores, it was fun sometimes to just go into a random server and dick around. Cheating isn't much fun when in servers where you're a regular, it is actually quite lame. The funny thing is that I'd never been accused of cheating while actually running a cheat, but I've been accused countless times when playing seriously. Ok, that's a lie....one time I was running an aimbot and I was planting the bomb, just as I finished an enemy appeared, and since I was still holding the fire button my gun jumped up and popped him in the head...unzoomed with a scout, from a fair distance. Someone called me a cheater then, I didn't deny it. I realize that most people think that cheating is pathetic and whatever, and if you're trying to be taken seriously and cheat, then it is. But, every now and then just goofing off with a cheat can be fun.
I also was an mid-level admin on my now deceased clan's server(sigh). Looften is right, the only true way to prevent cheating is to monitor, log, record and ban. I spent soo much time in spectator mode recording suspected cheaters, using my non-clan name of course. It was all a waste though because the server went down shortly after I had actually collected enough evidence to warrant a ban.
My main problem with most cheaters is not that they are cheating, but they are often assholes too. They talk all sorts of trash and are usually foul-mouthed little bastards. If they were nice guys, I wouldn't mind as much. I'd rather play with a nice cheater than an asshole with skill.
