i used to be a big fan too, but i haven't been reading very much either. i'd sporadically pick up x-men for a couple months. i don't know all the details. are you talking about the mindwipe when magneto ripped out wolverine's adamantium skeleton?
i'll just briefly say random events that i still remember, but i don't know how much it'll help.
-colossus martyred himself to help dr. moira find a cure to the legacy virus.
-magneto dies. by wolverine, too.
-evidently now there's a second stage to mutant growth. jean is losing her telekinesis, but becomes a more powerful telepath. beast becomes more feral. white queen has some kind of weird organic diamond skin thing.
-sentinels sent by xavier's separated-at-birth twin sister slaughter millions of mutants on genosha.
-professor x is able to walk again courtesy of shi'ar technology. and the public knows that xavier's school is a school of mutants now.
-wolverine got mind controlled by apocalypse and became his horseman (death, i think). he had to beat sabretooth for the honor, i believe. the reward was an adamantium skeleton, so he's got that back.
-white queen joined the x-men as an instructor. cyclops is telepathically cheating on jean with the white queen.
-new costumes. it's more like a uniform now.
the one thing i don't know is: where the hell did all the old characters go? gambit, rogue, storm, etc.? all that's left is cyclops, wolverine, jean grey, angel, nightcrawler, iceman, and beast.
