I don't mind a lesser-known band that I like getting exposed; that's great. The problem is, as OMFUG stated, that a band's sound changes to accomodate the single that sold.
The Offspring are a great example of that; they used to write fueled, meaningful lyrics, with almost every song having a purpose, but by the time Americana was out, their popular songs were "Get a Job" "Pretty Fly" and later (ugh)"Original Prankster". If their songs like "Tehran" (or "Baghdad"; same song about neighboring asshole countries) were pushed for airplay and made people think, then that's great. But instead, they chose to cater to the "Give it to me baby" crowd.
That's why bands getting popular sucks: because they typically alienate their original fanbase to draw in larger crowds.
