In March, I moved from Boston to LA so I know all about the PITA that you're going through. I did some research before choosing and I went with Penske.
IIRC, the price was something like $2400, minus 10% for booking online, minus ANOTHER 15% for being a AAA member. Well, I wasn't a member but you better believe I joined up right then and paid the $50 membership fee to get the AAA discount of over ~$300. It ended up costing around $1900 plus insurance, while UHaul was charging ~$2800 for shittier trucks.
I evengot into a fender-bender along the way and Penske was great about it. If you are towing a car, YOU NEED to get the thing that keeps all 4 wheels of the car off the ground. It's way better than the one that keeps 2 wheels on the highway.
The only downside to Penske was that there are no CD players (I don't think any of the companies have them). We loaded all our CD's onto our laptop, bought a $30 iRock wireless adapter that allowed us to listen to the songs on the truck radio instead of laptop speakers. To keep the laptop running, we bought a $90 AC/DC adapter at RadioShak and returned it for our money back within 30 days after we got to LA.
There are deals to be had.
