You can't beat having both
If you do, you can afford to get a less powerful laptop - because you can still get all your essentials done on the road and come back to the main comptuer for the real grunt work.
Basically desktops have faster components, are better value for money and are easier (usually) to upgrade and/or fix. Laptops are obviously a more elegant portable solution, hold their value longer.
