I have found a utility called TrID that helps. It reads "magic number" from the file and tries to tell what kind of file it is. It can also add the most likely extension to the file and more.
It's a command line utility available both for win and linux. Authors webpage is Marco Pontello's Home - Software - TrID.
This is not a viewer but it can help with filtering out the known garbage.
