SirLance, do you have a Mac or PC at home? I've found syncing contacts and calendars from Thunderbird/Windows Live/etc. to be quite a hassle with my Windows PC, vs. my Mac, which is incredibly easy.
If you have a Mac, get an iPhone. It's that simple. They work perfectly together, truly. The tandem experience is unmatched by any other.
If you are on a Windows machine, don't discount the iPhone, but know there's some hassle in syncing compared to a Mac. It's a bit easier with Outlook, but you'll probably need to do some googling.
