Their relationship started off as small talk.
Later this year, it will culminate with them taking a walk down the wedding aisle.
Melisa Wallace, 26, and her fiance, Matt Montgomery, 29, traveled to the BCS National Championship game, where the couple of nearly five years became engaged.
Wallace said she never saw Montgomery’s marriage proposal coming.
“I had absolutely no idea he was going to propose,” Wallace said. “He (Matt) never acted different or nervous. Everything seemed normal for the preparation of an Auburn game.”
Wallace and Montgomery traveled to Las Vegas on Jan. 7 and then on to Phoenix before the national championship game on Jan. 10.
Wallace, a patient registration representative with the East Alabama Medical Center’s Heart Center Cardiology, said something about the countdown to kickoff felt different.
“During the War Eagle cry at kickoff, I was spinning my shaker and crying with the rest of the Auburn Family ‘WAAAAAAAAAAAAAR’ when I heard him say, ‘You wanted to be something more…” I turned to look at him, and he was on his knee in the stands with a ring,” Wallace recalled. “I immediately started crying. He asked me if I would marry him, and I’m pretty sure it was a solid three minutes before I said anything because I couldn’t stop crying … but of course, I said yes.”
Some nearby fans helped memorialize the moment by snapping a photo for the newly-engaged couple, who Wallace described as “huge” Auburn fans.
Since returning from the game, Wallace entered the photo in a BCS photo contest at the EAMC for employees who traveled to the game.
“He (Montgomery) is my best friend. We tell each other everything and rely on each other for help and support,” Wallace said. “I couldn’t ask for a better person to spend the rest of my life with.”
Although they have not set an exact date yet, Wallace said she and Montgomery are looking at Aug. 27 as a possible wedding date.
Wallace said she couldn’t think of a better setting for Montgomery to pop the big question.
“There was no doubt in my mind I would say yes if he ever proposed. I talked about it all the time. He could not have proposed a better way,” Wallace said. “Auburn football is us.
“If he would’ve tried to plan some romantic night, I would have suspected something. If I could have picked the way for him to propose, I would have done it the same. It really was the perfect night.”

Not quite the production you have planned, but I'm sure this will be memorable. Haven't heard back from you Kurant. What did you decide to do?
