So the fundamental premise of this article is that, if you're a gun owner, you necessarily fall within one of the writer's categorizations. The writer is only demonstrating his ignorance about gun owners and the gun owning community. It's like listening to a white supremist give their opinion on categories of black people. I don't think the writer even knows any gun owners.
And why do folks like this assume that gun owners with a "SHTF" mentality have no other interest than firearms? If you take a look at survivalist forums you'd see they focus more on finding and sustaining resources. The majority of them also presume you understand the role of firearms within a survival scenario.
For the record I don't believe an apocalypse is around the corner. I arm myself for the here and now - also because it happens to be a hobby of mine. I harbor no delusions about fighting off the masses or rescuing someone. I'm a board certified Internal Medicine physician. I'm published and used to be a member of the Brown University faculty. I'd like to think I have a relatively realistic view of the world. The writer's characterizations strike me as a high schooler's caricature drawn from high school experience.

Thus when my eldest son asked me what he should have done, had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908, whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force which he could and wanted to use, and defended me, I told him that it was his duty to defend me even by using violence." - Mahatma Ghandi
